Democracy for a World on Fire
Democracy for Transition Coalition │ Series Publication #1
The Democracy for Transition (D4T) Coalition is a new initiative co-chaired by Democratic Society (Demsoc) and the European Environmental Bureau (EEB). The Democracy for Transition Coalition envisions a future where a resilient democracy is deeply embedded in environmental and climate governance, empowering people to shape the policies that affect their lives and health. To achieve a truly fair and just transition, we must ensure active democratic participation and consent.
As a part of this work, the D4T Coalition will be publishing a series of papers on various topics. Our first white paper is ‘Democracy for a World on Fire: Democratising the Climate Transition’, written by Arild Ohren.

About this publication: For the green transition to be successful and just, democratising it is absolutely central. However, in our work, we are encountering several challenges. These include framing participation solely through the lens of behaviour change, the lack of systemic thinking around participation, deficits in the representation of marginalised and vulnerable groups, legitimacy gaps in multi-level governance, and issues surrounding the financing of the transition. Overcoming these barriers is essential to ensuring a fair and inclusive green transition.
